“Les échelles is a book about a form of spontaneous and popular expression of the inhabitants of a dike. It reproduces, at a 1:1 scale, a collection of gelatin silver prints and ink drawings. It shows stone piles were made by fishermen of the Boulogne-sur-mer seawall, in the North of France. These are actually ladders they use to climb up and fish from the top of the wall. The analog prints, made on salvaged paper –expired– were all kept, whether 'successful' or 'failed', in the spirit of urgency and resourcefulness that guided the fishermen when they piled up these stones. The bricks stacks of color prints were made by me at home, as a discreet tribute, with bricks collected on site. The ink drawings continue to evoke that sea, just behind the wall, which we never actually see.”

“
